Eva K-8 School
Morgan County, Alabama
Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood, Inc. was selected by the Morgan County Board of Education for the design of a New K-8 School. The existing campus consisted of many separate buildings built over the course of many years. While many of the other buildings hold a special place in the heart of the community, the campus did not meet the needs of the students or the community. Goodwyn, Mills & Cawood, Inc. created a master plan for the campus that improves circulation while providing a more prominent public face with a new two-story 53,000 sf classroom building. The classroom building houses 475 students in K-4 thru eighth grades containing administration areas, a new media center, science classrooms, a choral room and many specialty classrooms. At the heart of the campus is a large grassed courtyard, which contains an outdoor amphitheater surrounded by covered walkways. A new clock tower anchors the corner of the campus. Existing recovered materials such as stone and heavy timber where used extensively throughout the project to further connect the new building to the history of the community. The project is a successful blend of old and new that responds well to the needs of the students and the local community.
