The Grand Hotel Renovations
Point Clear, Alabama

The Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama recently completed construction on the renovations of the interior and exterior spaces of the resort. With significant damage from Hurricane Katrina, the facility was in desperate need of repair. Every space on the ground level of the hotel was destroyed. In many cases damaged, decrepit and dated infrastructure was revealed - requiring not only replacement of finishes, but replacement and repair of structural flooring systems, new electrical and mechanical systems. As a result, the building was brought up code in many aspects where feasible.

Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, Inc., at the request of the Owner, used this opportunity to bring back the face of a local, historic gathering place with an improved image and new features. Great care was taken to recover the existing style both interior and exterior, as well as make additions or improvements based on the needs as they were prior to the storm. New furnishings, fabrics, and draperies were provided. The ambiance of the interior space was renewed.

The Conference Center sustained the most widespread damage of all the resort space. Due to its great size and proximity to the water, it held nearly 5 feet of water, destroying nearly all finishes throughout. Even lighting and ceiling systems were subjected to enough salt air and moisture to cause extensive rust. In addition to finish replacement, the scope of the damage revealed many code violations that were required to be addressed. The renovated conference center is now a safer facility due to its code updates, with a fresh updated look.
