Jenkins Brick Manufacturing Facility Moody, Alabama
Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, Inc. provided full service engineering capabilities for the unique construction of the Jenkins Brick - Jordan Plant which included civil, environmental, transportation, geotechnical engineering, and land surveying, as well as architecture for the manufacturing facility and interior design for the showroom. In cooperation with the General Contractor, Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC and the Owner, GMC helped guide the project through multi-agency coordination that included agreements, permits, and cooperation with ALDOT, the Army Corps of Engineers, St. Clair County, Norfolk Southern Corporation, ADECA, ADEM, the State of Alabama. For the first time, a major U.S. manufacturing facility, one of the largest of its kind in the nation, has been built in proximity to a landfill specifically to use the landfill methane gas as fuel. The new Jenkins Brick plant uses landfill gas to fuel its brick kilns, satisfying 40 percent of the plant’s energy needs initially with 100 percent projected in 10 years as the landfill grows. An industrial access road was designed to allow for two-way truck traffic over the Norfolk Southern rail line at the base of a mountain and between the new railroad spur and the Norfolk Southern rail line. The access road was funded by the Industrial Access funds from the State of Alabama. A rail spur, funded by ADECA’s CDBG program, was designed with all granite ballast to suit the Owner’s requirement for no limestone on-site. GMC worked with the Army Corps of Engineers on the wetlands and waters delineation and confirmation, as well as on individual permits for impacts to wetlands and waters. NPDES construction storm water runoff permits were obtained through ADEM.
