Von Braun Complex at Redstone Arsenal
Huntsville, Alabama

Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood, Inc., formerly Goodrum Knowles, served as the lead on the design of a 230,000 SF five-story administrative office building, a central plant addition and enclosed pedestrian walkway connecting the new building to the Von Braun Complex, Phase One building. For continuity of the complex, the Phase Two architectural design utilizes the design vocabulary established in Phase One. The facility design utilizes Sustainable design concepts to meet a bronze level of the Sustainable Project Rating Tool (SPiRiT). The exterior material colors and hues are well suited to our climate and the surrounding natural landscape and match the existing complex buildings. Meeting Department of Defense mandates, Von Braun Complex, Phase Two is designed in accordance with the latest Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection standards, Life Safety Code and UFC regulations. The sitework design supports expansion of the complex incorporating new vehicular roadways, storm drainage, utility services and erosion control. The front entry design varies from the Phase One building to meet higher levels of anti-terrorism and force protection requirements. The outdoor plaza at the front of the building permits fire truck access and supplements pedestrian walkways. Programmed to accommodate 1,000+ employees, the administrative building interior floor plans are designed to be universally functional on each floor except for the first floor where public functions are located. The space plan of open work areas and private offices, along with the building core, stacked conference and meeting rooms, business centers and typical core functions from floor to floor. This planning direction allows the building user maximum flexibility in establishing workstation groups responding to changing personnel and organizational needs. The project costs total over $40 million.
