Former Colonial BancGroup Headquarters
Size: 216,000 sf
Status: Completed 2007
The former Colonial Bancorp Headquarters, now BB&T, is a 216,000 square-foot state-of-the-art office building designed by GMC. A three-story atrium encompasses the main lobby area and grand staircase, with travertine-clad floors featured throughout. The meticulous design of the executive corridor allows for shared staff and resources, while also maintaining private office space behind glass doors. Multipurpose training rooms, a cafeteria and mail room are among the employee amenities housed within, in conjunction with corporate offices for marketing, loan operations, bank card services, wealth management, accounting, credit risk, security and human resources. The 24-person board room contains concealed audio-visual equipment and an adjacent dining room, along with offices for the financial services group’s executive management and two affiliated attorneys. A covered walkway links the corporate office to its 43,000 square-foot, cast-in-place concrete parking deck, comprising three-stories and capacity for 360 cars. The building was designed to accommodate future expansion. GMC’s scope of services included master planning, pre-design, programming, architecture and engineering, construction administration and landscape architecture. Engineering services for the 15-acre site included site design, utilities and grading.
