Greif Brothers Property Assessment
GMC assessed and determined the feasibility of a reuse plan for the abandoned Greif Brothers facility. The project has involved the integration of environmental assessment, reuse planning and redesign, and development of cleanup alternatives to build a dynamic approach to reutilization of the Greif Brothers facility in Cullman. The team found solutions that would allow the renovation and utilization of some buildings on site while groundwater cleanup is ongoing. The planned utilization of phytoremediation techniques will breakdown contaminants at the site without employing widespread soil removal activities. The plants utilized in this innovative technology to metabolize the contaminants will perform at a much lower cost than more conventional methods and will provide much needed aesthetic qualities to the site. The trees utilized in the project will continue to provide environment enhancing properties long after the groundwater cleanup goals are met. The overall site design complements the Cullman greenway that extends through the center of the downtown and will now extend through the Greif property. The hot spot was treated via soil-bending with a chemical oxidant to break down the most concentrated solvents. The project was recognized by the Battelle Memorial Institute.
