The Greenfield site for construction is the largest activated carbon manufacturing facility in North America. Facilities included four furnaces, boiler, steam turbine generator, stack, lignite crusher, numerous silos, river water intake structure and other ancillary structures. GMC provided geotechnical services, Construction Materials Testing (Pile Load Test, Pile Monitoring, Concrete Sampling & Testing) and Intake Structure Design. Geotechnical Exploration consisted of drilling boring across the site to evaluate the subsurface conditions at the plant site and river intake. The plant site contained mine spoil from and adjacent lignite mine. Field resistivity tests were performed in the main plant area for grounding design and corrosion potential. Geotechnical recommendations included site preparation, evaluation of the on site materials to be used as fill, shallow and deep foundation design recommendations and light and heavy duty pavement recommendations.
