Mill Creek Elementary and Middle Schools
Size: 240,000 sf
GMC developed this new K-8 prototype for Williamson County Schools, the first of which is the combined Mill Creek Elementary and Middle Schools. As the first of the K-8 prototypes to be built, Mill Creek is situated on a large campus that includes the Nolensville High School, thus creating the academic hub of the Nolensville community. The building marries an elementary school and a middle school connected by a central spine with an administrative wing. To help students orient themselves, the wings use the dominant colors of their school. The elementary school colors are green with blue accent, green being the main color, and the middle school's colors are blue with green accents, so their spaces are primarily blue. A fourth wing of shared auxiliary spaces with both blue and green throughout includes separate cafeterias served by a common kitchen, a gymnasium with a stage for elementary school assembly, a separate gymnasium for the middle school, a separate middle school auditorium with performance stage, and separated media centers with centralized circulation desks and office between them. The auxiliary wing can be accessed after hours separately from the main academic building keeping the classrooms secure. The connecting spine at the center of the facility also houses a media center, art labs, speech, computer labs, resource rooms, band, music, science and flexible classroom spaces used for teacher training, testing, or collaborative learning. The separate classroom wings for elementary and middle school wings contain 68 student classrooms and 4 special needs student classrooms. Two grand staircases connect the 2-story academic wings and the atrium space outside that serves as pre-function space for the auditorium and cafeteria. GMC provided the planning, programming, architecture and interior design for this project.
