Troy Municipal Airport Improvements and Instrument Landing System

The GMC team has worked on numerous projects at the Troy Municipal Airport at N. Kenneth Campbell Field, including architectural design and construction services for the new Operations & Training Facility, renovation of the Training and Maintenance Hangars and corresponding site improvements. Both of these were completed with private funding. The team has also performed the installation of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) with an End- Fire Glide Slope, which makes it possible to land aircraft in unfavorable weather conditions and allows larger aircraft to land. The system is one of an estimated 60 in the world, half of which are in the United States and was the first end-fire glide slope installation designed by a private engineering firm. All end-fire glide slope systems prior to this have been designed through the Federal Aviation Administration’s internal engineering department. Commissioning the End Fire ILS opens up the almost 6,200 feet of runway for all weather operations by larger aircraft and makes the airport a catalyst for economic development. The project team included representatives from the City, the U.S. Army, the FAA, ALDOT Aeronautics Bureau, Watts Antenna Company and local contractors. The U.S. Army will maintain the system and handle the daily operations. GMC’s ongoing projects with the City include the production of a new Airport Layout Plan and the accompanying narrative, which describes the use of the airport and details the estimated cost and timeframe of proposed plan phases, as well as the identification and removal of obstructions within the Approach Surface for primary and secondary runways.
