The Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT) Maritime Science Center is a multipurpose training and education space designed by GMC to provide job specific, pre-employment and on-the-job training to further the ship-building and related industries in Mobile, Alabama. The design team used color, materials and forms, including a gangway entry, wooden beam-like walls, and a screen partition, to create a structure resembling loaded container ships. Comprised within the 100,000 square-foot facility are welding stations, OSHA-specifications labs, instructional classrooms, computer and electrical labs, executive and administrative offices, conference rooms and assembly space overlooking high-bay manufacturing areas. The design was heavily influenced by the site’s coastal location, with precautionary measures such as placement of critical offices and rooms on the second floor whenever possible, to prepare for possible hurricanes and flooding.
