Burrow Center at Wallace State Community College is a 51,000 square-foot performing and fine arts center that accommodates a museum, performance band, jazz band and show choir programs, along with art programs such as ceramics, drawing and graphic design. Classrooms, performance halls, faculty offices and conference areas surround the central two-story “Commons,” which functions as a lounge during school hours and a formal pre-function or banquet hall for performances and special events. To complement the modern space, a 5,000 square-foot art gallery maintains permanent and rotating collections of art, including ceramic and sculptural pieces. The 250-seat auditorium designed for musical recitals and performances features a variety of woods for acoustic and visual warmth and also allows music to resonate throughout the space without echoing or altering the natural sound. Full glass on each end of the Commons area provides natural day lighting with steel handrail details complementing the exterior design. The building was designed around sustainable principles using durable, low-maintenance materials and energy-efficient systems and fixtures.
