Alabama State University Football Stadium
Size: 450,000 sf
A grand opening for Alabama State University’s new Football Stadium on Thanksgiving Day 2012 marked the beginning of an era for not only Hornet Football, but the entire ASU Athletics Program. The 450,000-foot facility sits just off Interstate-85 on the University campus, making it highly-visible to the thousands of people that drive by each day. Approximately 26,500 seats are distributed among the stadium’s three levels, with a majority of seating on the sidelines rather than the end zones. Other features include 20 skyboxes, 200 box seats, 750 club seats and two party terraces, with an open plaza in one end zone that leaves room for expansion. When developing the new ASU Stadium, the design team accommodated for incremental growth to occur as a result of the University’s increasing enrollment and support of the Hornet football program. A state-of-the-art press box includes multiple coaches’ booths, media broadcast areas, writers’ press area and scoreboard operations, including instant replay. The $62 million multi-purpose facility features a synthetic turf-playing surface and also has the capacity to accommodate other athletic events, in addition to special events and concerts. GMC provided architectural, landscape and civil engineering services, and specific design support for the portion of the stadium encompassing team locker rooms, media rooms, training rooms, a recruiting lounge and offices for year-round use.
