Selma Comprehensive Plan Phase I
Status: Completed 2008
The Selma Comprehensive Community Master Plan provides long-term vision and goals to shape the potential growth and management of the historic City of Selma. Some of the major plan concepts include restoring Selma’s Southern Downtown District as an active, mixed-use City Center, preserving the region’s historic resources and expanding the riverfront development. Designed with maximum flexibility to accommodate for the future, the plan reflects a 25-year vision and incorporates input from citizens and other stakeholders gathered through a series of public meetings and discussions. The plan outlines policies and recommendations for land use and zoning, downtown revitalization, transportation and access, housing and neighborhoods, community facilities, infrastructure and services, economic and community development, arts and culture, special districts, natural resource and recreation and historic preservation. Downtown improvements consisted of renovating the arts and cultural center, along with downtown historic museums and buildings, designating Broad Street as a “signature street,” enhancing streetscapes and connecting the downtown and riverfront districts to adjacent neighborhoods. The plan also included corridor development along US 80, revitalization of residential neighborhoods and newer commercial business districts, a greenway and parks plan and potential expansion of the City Hall complex and convention/civic center.
