Goodwyn Mills and Cawood (GMC) worked with the Birmingham Zoo to master plan and designed the new arrival experience and Asian Passage exhibits at Birmingham’s 4-star rated and AZA accredited zoo. GMC has previously worked at the zoo to expand and enhance their parking area with a natural visitor experience that preserved 70% of the existing trees and created an entrance path underneath a shaded tree canopy where visitors would begin their zoo excursions. GMC was asked to create an all new visitor entry to replace the existing 59-year old entrance. The new entrance experience includes a new 2-story building, restrooms, two (2) plazas, outdoor classroom, natural play areas, and an event lawn before leading into the zoo exhibits. The existing entry was re-purposed for group entry with a separate gathering zone. The new front entry plaza allows room for queuing and ticketing before passing through the entry gates under the large canopy of the new main building which includes the gift shop, administrative offices and an education center. The large plaza past the gates allows plenty of room for families and groups to meet with seating walls and a view into the zoo exhibits from the elevated plaza. Visitors are directed around the natural play area and event lawn towards the exhibits. GMC also designed a new Asian Passage area for the zoo which includes new habitats to house endangered Asian species such as the Malayan tiger, red panda, Komodo dragon, and Sumatran orangutan.
