Civil Rights Memorial Center
Montgomery, Alabama
Size: 10,104 sf
The Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, Alabama, the birthplace of the modern Civil Rights Movement, honors those who fought and sacrificed for justice, equality and human rights. The 10,104-square-foot center houses state-of-the-art exhibits, a 69-seat theater, a classroom for educational activities and an area dedicated to current social justice issues. The Wall of Tolerance, an interactive exhibit where visitors may sign their names and pledge their commitment to the ideals of the Civil Rights Movement, also resides within. An outdoor connecting path slices through the site and creates an inviting link for passers-by between the sidewalk and main entrance. The adjacent Civil Rights Memorial, created by Vietnam Veterans Memorial designer Maya Lin, features a black granite fountain wall inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream Speech” and pays homage to those who lost their lives during the struggle.
