Mobile County Courthouse Annex Additions & Renovations
Size: 108,000 sf
In 2007 the Mobile County departments and their staff that occupied the existing one story Annex Building were relocated and demolition began with a goal of creating a new four story 108,000 square foot facility utilizing the original post tension slab and column structure previously built. The design was further complicated by the existence of the historic LeVert House that would remain at the north side of the new Annex. Towers were also added on the east and west ends of the building and a stair and elevator tower was added at the south side. The Annex is located in downtown Mobile between the existing Mobile Government Plaza and the future Mardi Gras Park. The new expanded annex houses a wide variety of County functions: Probate Court offices, records, and archives, two Probate courtrooms, judges chambers and legal library, downtown branch offices for the License and Revenue Commissioners, Board of Registrars, Marriage License and Records Intake. The building is traditional-style architecture, which compliments the other buildings of historic downtown Mobile without pretending to be classical. It transitions between the modern Government Plaza building next door and the Historic District across the street.
