Geotechnical

GMC’s Geotechnical engineers evaluate earth materials such as soil, rock and groundwater and how they interact with structures such as building foundations, retaining systems and roadways. Our geotechnical expertise is often used in GMC’s large multidisciplinary designs and is frequently sought by clients as a service in its own right.  From preliminary design and analysis through testing and observation during construction, GMC’s geotechnical engineers can provide the expertise for long term, cost-effective design solutions.

Alabama State University Life Sciences Building

Montgomery, Alabama

GMC provided a preliminary geotechnical evaluation of the site of the proposed new Life Sciences Building. The team evaluated the subsurface conditions on the site in order to develop preliminary recommendations for foundation design and site preparation. The building is a concrete framed structure with the ground floor being below grade and four levels above grade. The ground floor elevation is about 10 feet below the existing grade. GMC also provided Construction Materials Testing Services and served as the Special Inspector. Testing services included foundation and subgrade evaluation, concrete sampling and testing, reinforcing steel observation, and masonry block observation and testing.
