April 20, 2023 · Accolades

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is pleased to announce that Chamblee City Hall has received the AIA Georgia 2023 Design Awards People’s Choice Award for projects built over 5,000 square feet.

The new city hall is the centerpiece for the city’s developing downtown master plan. The building serves as a beacon for the community and evokes a sense of historical significance and pride for the city.  GMC’s team designed the building to promote active community engagement and service and incorporated mercantile architectural elements throughout the building.

The front entryway features a wood and steel trellis that reaches out and draws people into the three-story lobby and an atrium space connects the north and west ends of the building to allow multiple entry points for the public. Historical brick detailing was used along the large arched windows that cover a double-height community room and council chambers that can fit more than 180 people. The building is 28,000 square feet and houses a number of city departments such as economic development, finance, parks and recreation and more.

The building also features rooftop balconies and outdoor green spaces for city staff to enjoy. The east-facing balconies can be utilized for outdoor concerts held at city hall, and the west-facing balconies are situated to face the large future park area. which also serves as an outdoor break room for staff.

GMC served as the architect, landscape architect, civil engineer and electrical engineer and worked alongside NBP Engineers, PES Structural Engineers and Reeves Young for the project.
