The historic Bush Hills neighborhood celebrated the opening of the new Bush Hills Connection Complex alongside partners Live HealthSmart Alabama, a University of Alabama at Birmingham initiative, and BL Harbert International on May 24.

The former Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, which had been closed for over 10 years, was renovated to create a space for the community to connect, thrive and create a healthier and more sustainable Bush Hills community. The complex includes a full kitchen, recreation center, auditorium, courtyard garden patio, farm stand and the Bush Hills Community Garden & Urban Farm.

“The grand opening of the Bush Hills Connection Complex reflects what can happen when neighbors work together,” said Walladean Streeter, President of the Bush Hills Neighborhood Association. “This is more than a ribbon cutting and the revealing of a remodeled building, it represents the power of partnerships, neighborhood pride and perseverance to achieve a collective goal.”

A Live HealthSmart Alabama designee, Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) worked alongside numerous community partners including BL Harbert, the City of Birmingham, Birmingham City Schools, Alabama Power and Kirkpatrick Concrete Inc., to upgrade the surrounding infrastructure such as repairing sidewalks and building new ones, planting trees and enhancing green spaces, and installing ADA street ramps, crosswalks, outdoor furniture and street lighting to key locations to increase visibility.
