The GMC coastal team, formerly South Coast Engineers, performed the hydrodynamic modeling for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources study to restore hydrology and flushing in Upper Mobile Bay. This comprehensive assessment of tidal circulation, flushing, and sediment transport evaluated multiple design alternatives aimed at improving the tidal connectivity across the US Highway 98 causeway.
For nearly the past century, the causeway land bridge has served as an impediment to natural tidal flows in the upper portion of the Mobile Bay estuary and lower portion of the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta.
Our team of coastal engineers evaluated improvements in circulation and flushing, and potential changes in sedimentation patterns, as a result of proposed bridge openings and box culverts along the roadway alignment. Simulations were performed over a wide range of hydrodynamic and meteorological conditions to capture the existing and proposed behaviors under both current and projected future conditions.
GMC is one of the most comprehensive multi-disciplined architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast.
