Bryan King, urban designer and planner with Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC), has been accepted into the Jones Valley Teaching Farm (JVTF) Good Community Food Fellowship.

JVTF creates opportunities to educate and lead the youth in Birmingham to create a healthy future for themselves and their communities through the power of food. The Good Community Food Fellowship is an initiative designed to strengthen the local food system in Birmingham by providing training opportunities for urban growers.

 “I am excited to have been accepted into this program and to learn new skills to bring to GMC’s clients and our community,” says King. “Building communities is the core of our mission, and I believe through this fellowship and the strong work that JVTF is doing for Birmingham, we can create a brighter and healthier community for our young people here.”

Over the course of 10 months, fellows will volunteer at community gardens and attend classes on logistics of starting a community garden, community garden focused grant writing and more. Fellows will be able to apply what they learn in the management of individual community garden plots at the Center for Food Education, as well as be able to apply for assistance in establishing new community garden sites of their own once they have completed the program.
