Aiken County Public School District‘s North Augusta Middle School is entering an exciting new era as construction begins on a transformative $50 million renovation and expansion, designed by Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC).
This ambitious project, made possible by the 2024 renewal of the one-cent sales tax approved by Aiken County voters, will modernize the historic campus and create state-of-the-art learning environments for students and staff.
Originally constructed in 1954, the campus has evolved over the years but has continued to face challenges with aging infrastructure and outdated systems. While a 2010 addition brought some updates, much of the school remained rooted in its mid-century origins. The upcoming improvements will address these issues by introducing a secure, clearly defined main entrance; upgraded mechanical and electrical systems; and flexible, collaborative classrooms filled with natural light.
The design also features centralized administrative suites, enhanced circulation and dedicated spaces for athletics, performing arts and exploratory learning. Outdoor learning areas will further enrich the educational experience by extending instruction beyond the classroom.
As construction moves forward, the project will reorient the campus, integrating both new and existing spaces into a cohesive, unified environment. The North Augusta community is eager to watch this vision take shape, confident that the revitalized campus will inspire generations of students to come.
GMC is excited to play a part in this state-of-the-art project, with our team providing architecture, interior design and geotechnical engineering services.
Contract Construction is serving as the general contractor on the project, with additional partners including Hass & Hildebrand as the civil engineer, Buford Goff & Associates providing mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering, as well as fire protection services; and ADC Engineering providing structural engineering and landscape architecture services.
