GMC was approached to help the city of Douglasville move into the future. The plan, Forward Douglasville, 2023–2033, is the city’s roadmap for growth and development over a 10-year horizon. This update process includes evaluating past progress, analyzing data and trends (population, housing, economy, infrastructure), setting future goals, and defining how to implement them.
One aspect emphasized in the plan is something called "character areas". Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, Douglasville uses “character areas” to guide future growth. These areas define the unique identity of the city and development goals for different parts of the city like downtown. This helps protect the cherished community character while still allowing for strategic growth.
The plan directly links population and housing projections to future infrastructure needs. Douglasville is planning ahead to ensure roads, utilities, schools, and public services grow alongside development, so future growth doesn’t overload city systems.
The plan has next steps built in. It includes a detailed Community Work Program with: specific projects and policies, responsible parties (city departments or partners), funding strategies and timelines. This adds accountability and ensures the plan isn't just visionary, it can actually be done. View the entire plan here.
