The Graniteville Elementary School project is a successful example of adaptive reuse, demonstrating how thoughtful design can bring new life into an existing facility. Originally constructed in the 1960s as an adult education center for Aiken County Public Schools, the building was repurposed to serve as a modern elementary school. The transformation focused on meeting current educational needs, safety requirements and accessibility standards while remaining authentic to the building’s original design.
A key architectural feature of the renovation is the 4,500-square-foot cafeteria addition, thoughtfully designed to serve dual purposes. It will serve as a vibrant and flexible dining space, as well as an assembly area for school events and after-hour community gatherings. With natural light and a welcoming atmosphere, the space comfortably accommodates large groups while enhancing the overall campus experience.
Site improvements also played a major role in enhancing functionality and student experience. New vehicle circulation routes were designed, including a dedicated stacking lane to streamline pick-up and drop-off operations, as well as an emergency access road. Outdoor amenities were upgraded with new playgrounds, thoughtful landscaping and improved exterior lighting. A previously deteriorated road between classroom wings was transformed into a landscaped pocket park, offering an inviting outdoor learning and gathering space.
