Once a former fire station, the Iva Branch Library has been successfully transformed into a modern, welcoming 4,000-square-foot facility serving the community of Iva, South Carolina. Located in the heart of downtown, the new library not only preserves the historic character of the original building but also increases foot traffic, supports local businesses and provides a vibrant space for community engagement – helping to revitalize the town center.

The library provides internet access, a full collection of books and materials, circulation services and flexible spaces for classes and community events. Residents can enjoy collaborative meeting areas, large public tables and comfortable seating for reading, research or remote work. The facility also offers a safe and engaging space for students during the summer months. To ensure accessibility for all users, ADA-compliant sidewalks and entrances were designed along East Front Street, making the library welcoming and easy to navigate for everyone.
This adaptive reuse project received an AIA Greenville Citation Award in Adaptive Reuse, highlighting GMC’s commitment to sustainable design and showing how historic industrial buildings can be successfully repurposed while preserving architectural character and supporting community revitalization.

GMC is one of the most comprehensive multi-disciplined architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast.
