Originally constructed in 1916 in downtown Athens, Alabama, the historic Limestone County Courthouse was built in the Neoclassical style. The renovation, designed by GMC, improved the structural integrity of the over 100-year-old building while also adding state-of-the-art HVAC, electrical, data and communications systems.

Updated interior

GMC provided the complete renovation of existing three-story courthouse, including demolition of existing walls and construction and integration of new structural steel frame into the existing load bearing masonry wall building system to accommodate the new open floor plan space requirements, new code compliant mechanical systems, new code compliant plumbing system and new code compliant electrical systems. The renovation program included new updated courtrooms, new courtrooms, new and upgraded judges offices, new and updated code compliant restrooms and support spaces along with new code compliant egress stairs inserted into the building.

Revived exterior

Exterior building upgrades include replacement of exterior windows, repair of existing monumental steps, and screened mechanical areas, along with a new roof system and repairs to existing structure that were required due to roof and envelope deterioration. The Limestone County Courthouse renovation won the Alabama Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America 2017 BuildSouth Award in the renovation under $5 million category.
