Washington County Hospital, a rural hospital in Chatom, Alabama, originally constructed in the 1950s and 60s, was in need of a new emergency department – a need that was made even clearer through the pandemic. GMC’s Healthcare team developed a cost-efficient solution that entailed the construction of a separate and robust facility, adjacent to the existing hospital.

The addition in Chatom brings six new beds and more space to Washington County Hospital. Staff are now able to handle large-scale emergencies and treat patients from around the region. Washington County relies on one ER for emergencies and immediate care and the upgrade is much needed. Since the 1950s the hospital and county relied on a dated and small emergency room. It’s easy to see how the expansion will benefit staff and those receiving care.
Alabama Gov. Ivey shared her thoughts on the importance of rural medicine at the dedication service for the emergency department. She said the new facilities in Washington County provide “a shining example for hospitals across the state, big and small.” The emergency room includes a triage space, trauma bariatrics and a decontamination area with three showers as well as negative pressure rooms for contagious patients.
