GMC's Pensacola team partnered with Pensacola-based contractor Whitesell-Green to transform an abandoned, 1940s-era building into a modern, functional space for their headquarters. The extensive renovation included a complete interior buildout and the restoration of original exterior openings that had previously been infilled. This revitalization not only provided a contemporary new workspace for a well-established business but also created additional space for future local tenants. The project has played a key role in sparking renewed growth and investment in the surrounding area.
The new office and design pay tribute to the building’s history through its industrial adaptive reuse, with the design team making deliberate choices to respect the historical significance of the structure. The design was guided by the client's vision, which prioritized maintaining a contemporary yet industrial aesthetic throughout the space. Situated in a transitional and up-and-coming neighborhood in Pensacola, the renovation provided a additional office space to the area, serving as a lasting asset to the community.
The revitalization of the previously dilapidated building was a driving force for the surrounding area’s development. The property has become increasingly accessible, with a focus on pedestrians and a vibrant atmosphere. The original structure was a secluded warehouse, but the introduction of an outdoor patio has made it more welcoming to the street. Recent additions in the vicinity includes a new skatepark, a taqueria, and several opportunities for further expansion.
The project recently received the 2024 NAIOP Northwest Florida Rehab and Repurpose Development of the Year, recognizing its innovative approach to adaptive reuse and its significant contribution to Pensacola’s downtown revitalization.
