GMC acquired an individual permit to fill 25.94 acres of wetlands and 25,507 linear feet of waters, in order to render the site suitable. Permit requirements included pre-permit consultation, Individual Permit Application, preparation of detailed mitigation plan, on-site meetings with regulatory agencies (including US Army Corps of Engineers, US Fish and Wildlife Service, EPA, Alabama Department of Environmental Management, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and State Historic Preservation Officer), etc. The stream mitigation included the design and implementation of approximately 10,000 linear feet of stream channel restoration. This process included the assessment of an on-site reference stream reach as well as the assessment of the two stream reaches planned for channel restoration. The assessment incorporated the Rosgen stream classification system to evaluate the pattern, profile, and dimension of the stream channels. The restoration plan included the reforestation of riparian buffers as well as in-channel restoration to re-establish sinuosity and bankfull width discharge relationships. Wetland mitigation also involved the hydrologic restoration of approximately 20 acres of forested wetlands.
GMC also provided engineering and surveying services for the improvements to Teague Road, which directly supports all traffic for the plant. The project transformed the County Road to a bifurcated four-lane highway connecting the new U.S. Highway 31 to U.S. Highway 331 and included the removal of two existing bridges and replacement with two interstate multi-lane bridges and two waterway bridges over Wiley Creek.
As expansions have occurred over the years, GMC has been involved with the site work for 2 additional engine manufacturing buildings, numerous additions to the new car parking area, employee parking enlargements and miscellaneous new construction throughout the site.
GMC is one of the most comprehensive multi-disciplined architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast.
