Thornwell Residence Hall at the University of South Carolina underwent a 41,000-square-foot renovation and addition, transforming the historic building into a modern student living environment. The redesigned floor plan shifts from apartment-style units to suite-style housing, increasing capacity while improving functionality and shared spaces.

The renovation transformed the residence hall into a vibrant, modern student living environment while carefully preserving its historic character. By reconfiguring the building with efficient suite-style planning, the project increased capacity by 30% without expanding the footprint. A new entry and renovated courtyard brought fresh energy and improved functionality, all while maintaining the original façade, slate roof and architectural details that give the building its timeless appeal.
Safety was a top priority throughout the project, with site-specific planning, routine training and ongoing coordination among project teams. Controlled demolition, enhanced fall protection and careful material handling kept the surrounding area safe, while campus security measures ensured a secure environment for students, staff and visitors both during construction and for years to come.
Reinvesting in the existing building extended its life and reduced the environmental and financial impact of new construction. Energy-efficient systems and durable materials helped lower long-term costs while supporting the university’s mission to provide high-quality, on-campus housing.
