GMC first began work on Janice Hawkins Park at Troy University back in 2007 with the final phase of the project being completed in late 2025. The park, named in honor of Janice Hawkins, wife of Chancellor Jack Hawkins, spans 30 acres of natural terrain and was created to bring together the university and the community. GMC has provided comprehensive design and engineering services for the park, focusing on ecological restoration, connectivity and campus enhancement.

Building a park for Troy

GMC designed and implemented new sidewalks, lighting, benches, landscaping, a fountain and stream restoration in 2009. This phase of the project included slope stabilization and a stormwater drainage assessment to prevent erosion, while preserving large shade trees and enhancing pedestrian connections between residence halls and academic areas.

Restoration

Over 600 linear feet of impaired stream were restored using Priority 2 natural channel design techniques, and 1,900 linear feet of new sinuous channel were constructed on the site. With more than 90 feet of elevation change from one end of the park to the lower pond, two natural stone weir waterfalls were designed to allow water to flow naturally through the site.

Partnership

During the final phase, efforts include invasive species control, slope repairs, pond enhancements and the addition of a perimeter trail. GMC coordinated with public and private stakeholders to secure additional funding for further stream restoration using EPA Section 319 funds. Landscaped slopes consisting of trees, native grasses and wildflower meadows create a natural and beautiful park setting for students and the community.
