The new Grovetown Depot is officially open, welcoming residents and visitors into a space designed to honor the past while welcoming the future. The 6,000-square-foot, city-operated facility now stands as a vibrant event space available for weddings, celebrations, meetings and community gatherings.

But the meaning behind the building runs much deeper.

Its opening represents far more than the completion of a project. For decades, Grovetown’s historic railroad depot existed only in fond memories and photographs. The original depot, first constructed between 1878 and 1879 and later replaced in 1891 with a more elaborate structure, served as a popular stop along the rail line from Augusta to Atlanta.

Before Grovetown became known as a military community, it was a thriving railroad town – a popular destination where wealthy Augusta residents had summer homes. For nearly 80 years, the depot connected the region until passenger rail service ended in 1970. The structure was eventually demolished in 1975, leaving behind a missing piece of the city’s identity.

In 2015, conversations began about bringing that landmark back. The goal was to restore a symbol that reflected where Grovetown began and how far it has come. As the architect for the project, our team approached the design with deep respect for that history, drawing inspiration from the original depot while thoughtfully adapting the structure to meet the community’s current needs.

The new one-story building was carefully designed to reflect the character of the original depot. Architectural details pay homage to the past, while interior elements – including the display of train conductor H. Clay Hardy’s uniform – help tell the story of Grovetown’s railroad heritage. Boards from the original site were also incorporated into the design, physically connecting the new structure to the historic one.

In late December 2025, residents joined Mayor Gary Jones and city council members for the ribbon cutting ceremony, marking a full-circle moment for the community.

The depot has already become a popular gathering place for the community – hosting events, meetings and celebrations that bring people together. The project bridges past and present, preserving what makes Grovetown unique while creating something new for today’s residents. It shows that the spirit of a place can endure for decades and, with thoughtful design, be meaningfully rebuilt.
