The Albany Street Drainage Improvements made an unforgettable impact on the community of Brunswick, GA. Prior to the project Albany Street regularly flooded the previous pipes were undersized, clogged and collapsing. The city is undergoing multiple projects as a part of their Rethinking Runoff Plan, but Albany Street was listed as high priority as many community members were being affected by the flooding. Brunswick selected GMC to provide engineering support and an effective solution.

To ensure the project achieved success, GMC attended multiple weekly inspections on the site to track progress and pinpoint possible challenges to prevent delays. This project was primarily for drainage improvements, but sidewalks and paving along the corridor were added. The project team prioritized environmental sustainability. To accomplish this, the team used both gray and green infrastructures with a bioswale in the median along Albany Street.
The green infrastructure protects natural resources and improves coastal resilience; this helps to restore the natural conditions of the site. Additionally, the gray infrastructure was engineered for stormwater management including pipes, stormwater inlets and a curb and gutter. The combined gray and green infrastructure design converted the existing raised grassed median into a bioswale to enhance water quality treatment and infiltration. This project was named 2026 Project of the Year by American Public Works Association (APWA) Georgia Chapter. GMC provided civil engineering, environmental, survey and geotechnical services for this project.
