The Brunswick Rethinking Runoff Plan is a collaborative effort focused on incorporating green infrastructure throughout the City of Brunswick to manage stormwater runoff and improve water quality. Through planning, grant support, engineering design and construction oversight, GMC helped transform a citywide vision into implemented green infrastructure projects at several community parks and facilities.
GMC partnered with the University of Georgia (UGA) to develop the 2022 Brunswick Rethinking Runoff Plan, an initiative focused on identifying opportunities to incorporate green infrastructure throughout the City of Brunswick. The plan included conceptual designs for water quality improvements at 28 locations, including parks, right-of-ways, schools and churches.
As the plan was being developed, GMC also prepared a successful Section 319(h) Grant Application to advance three sites through full design and implementation, including Liberty Ship Park, Goodyear Park and the downtown fire station. This funding helped turn the initial concepts into opportunities for tangible improvements across the community.
To continue the momentum of the Rethinking Runoff Plan, GMC applied for another round of Coastal Incentive Grant funding in 2023. The funding was used to prioritize the remaining 25 project areas, conduct advanced assessments at the top 10 sites and develop full engineering design plans for the top three.
GMC then pursued a second Section 319(h) Grant to support construction of those designs, and two projects were funded. Construction at Palmetto Square Park and Orange Square Park was completed in 2026.
GMC’s role extended beyond planning and design to help the City move the green infrastructure projects from concept to completion. The team provided grant administration and reporting, monitoring and evaluation of best management practice (BMP) performance and support for education and outreach associated with the projects.
Many of the practices were installed in-house by the City’s Public Works team, with GMC providing oversight and guidance throughout construction. Through continued collaboration with the City, GMC helped demonstrate how green infrastructure can be thoughtfully incorporated into existing community spaces while reducing stormwater runoff and improving water quality.
