Construction began mid-April of 2019 on the 5.1-mile loop with a portion from Shug Jordan Parkway. The loop connects to three roads: Shug Jordan Parkway, which links the I-85/US 29; Camp Auburn Rd, providing access to residential and commercial areas; and Old Camp Rd, providing access to additional residential areas and part of Auburn’s campus. According to Alabama Traffic Data in 2019 there were approximately 20,000 drivers daily on Shug Jordan Parkway.
The project included adding a new 3-lane curb and gutter roadway from the existing Camp Auburn Road to Shug Jordan Parkway. Shug Jordan Parkway was widened and resurfaced from an undivided 4-lane roadway to a 5-lane roadway with dedicated left turn lanes at the new Camp Auburn Road intersection and a right turn lane onto Camp Auburn Road. Roadwork was completed on both Camp Auburn Road and Shug Jordan Parkway to create a safe route for both campus traffic and visitors in addition to Research Park tenants.
This loop highway is a memorable piece of Auburn with history dating back to 1971 with the original name of “West University Drive” but later changed. The story behind the name change is due to a man named Ralph, nicknamed “Shug”. He was a well-known student athlete at Auburn, known for playing multiple sports and after graduating he later became the head coach for the university's football team. He led the team to many wins guiding Auburn Football to their success. The town of Auburn pays tribute to Jordan and his legacy by replacing the name of the highway to Shug Jordan Parkway. GMC had the privilege of being selected to provide all services for the design of this project.
