Birmingham’s Second Ave South is an arterial roadway serving as an urban corridor, with its central section between 24th and 32nd Street. This location is a lively area of the city with many commercial activities including dining, shopping and more. In 2024, the Birmingham street underwent a roadway diet, a refined existing sidewalk, improved accessibility and additional street parking.
Previously, Second Ave had sections with up to four lanes. Adjustments needed to be made to meet ADA requirements and to ensure safety for pedestrians. Through this project, these sections were converted into two lanes to adopt multimodal usage. The speed limit was also decreased from 35 mph to 25 mph, and a four-way stop sign was installed with 4,500 feet of street resurfacing.
Sustainability was also emphasized in the development of this project. A rain garden was added to the intersection on 28th and 29th street, the first in the city of Birmingham. The rain garden will provide filtered stormwater during rainy days and a new array of trees in the area. Furthermore, to aid in stormwater, runoff bioswales were constructed at the corners of specific intersections. This project included 0.85 miles of roadway, sidewalk and drainage improvements. GMC services included transportation, landscape architecture, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering and environmental.
