The Windsor Elementary School Addition and Renovation was designed to reinforce the school’s Learning Communities concept while providing new opportunities for collaboration, connection and flexible learning. With a focus on functionality and long-term adaptability, the design created a cohesive environment that better serves students, staff and the broader community.

New and Improved Spaces

A one-story addition serves as the key feature of the project, anchored by a gymnasium with a platform stage, green room and supporting utility spaces. Thoughtfully connected to the existing cafeteria, the design allows for seamless transitions between daily activities and larger school events. Additional enhancements – including group restrooms, a coach’s office, storage areas and a connecting corridor – ensure the space is both functional and adaptable, providing students with dedicated areas for physical activity, performances and school-wide gatherings.

Exterior site work included regrading and reconfiguring the rear parking area into a smaller lot that slopes toward the new gymnasium. The existing playground was demolished and replaced with a new one located in front of the gym, and two courtyard spaces were transformed into outdoor learning areas.

Reimagined Learning Environments

Interior renovations focused on creating dynamic, collaborative spaces that support modern teaching methods. The redesigned media center brought in more natural light with updated clerestory windows and an open ceiling, turning it into a bright, welcoming hub for learning.

Adjacent classrooms were reworked into a larger meeting and collaboration space, encouraging group interaction and cross-grade connection. Throughout the building, new flooring and vibrant accents added energy and cohesion, while newly created indoor and outdoor “community hubs” help foster stronger connections, creativity and flexible learning opportunities.
